One Hundred and Fifty Pledges to Improve Skills and Employability in Havant

The 9th annual Havant Skills and Employability Partnership Conference was hailed a success as 150 pledges from businesses, public bodies and training providers were made to improve employability and skills of young people in the Havant area.

Over 80 delegates, exhibitors and a line-up of esteemed speakers gathered at Langstone Technology Park in Havant for what was a packed agenda and interactive group workshops; talking about the skills shortage and proposed actions to tackle this.

Two local employers talked about the skills gap they were facing in both the short and long term and the importance of developing staff and succession planning. Speakers talked about talent management, leadership and how to engage with the younger generation through social media.

Delegates were also able to find out more about funding opportunities for training and apprenticeships from the exhibitors present.

The Havant Skills and Employability Partnership ended the event by challenging delegates to help equip young people with the skills they need for their future. The response was overwhelming with 150 pledges being handed to the Portsmouth Education Business Partnership (EBP) who will work with the various parties to make them happen. The pledges included support in the following events:

·         Mock interviews in Schools

·         Work experience placements

·         Meet the professional ‘speed networking’ event

·         Apprenticeships

·         Workplace visits

·         Visit to schools to talk with students about preparing for work

·         STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Fair

·         Opportunities Fair

·         Traineeships

·         Mentoring programme

·         Student and Graduate Internships

·         Careers Fair

·         Responsible Business Week

·         Give and Gain Day

Angela Mays, Chairperson of Havant Skills and Employability Partnership: “This event was brilliant with a superb line-up of speakers and cross sector audience each bringing a different perspective to the discussion. The whole purpose of the Partnership is to create growth by developing people and there was a real engagement and impetus to drive this forward. Our focus now is to turn talk into action, maintain the momentum and feedback, share and develop ideas.”

Cath Longhurst, Chief Executive, Portsmouth EBP: “This was an excellent event and it was really encouraging to see so many pledges made by so many people. EBP will be in contact with everyone who has made a pledge. This support will enable local young people to have contact with a wide range of people from the world of work, giving them the skills and inspiration they need for their futures.”
