More than 1,000 hearts raced in Round the Harbours cycle ride

More than a thousand riders took to pedal power to take part in The Round the Harbours Cycle Ride on Sunday 12 July, in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

As one of the leading business parks in Hampshire, Langstone Technology Park, was once again supporting and sponsoring this popular local event which has now been running for 25 years.

Cyclists of all abilities turned up to ride either a 30 mile route or a new 60 mile challenge for the more experienced. Langstone Technology Park was one of the four optional start and finish locations for the ride which traverses Hampshire’s finest harbours at Havant, Southsea, Fareham and Gosport; taking participants past long stretches of stunning coastline as well as on two ferry crossings.

Portsmouth News reports

The Portsmouth News reported that Regional event manager for the British Heart Foundation, Kate Glover, hopes the ride will raise £65,000.  She said: ‘It was a great turnout. It wasn’t the best weather but everyone was happy and enthusiastic. The people were incredible. They were doing it all for their friends and loved ones.’

  • Nathan Carr, 43, from Wiltshire was one of those.  He said: ‘I’m doing the ride in memory of my brother who died from a heart condition while riding his bike. ‘The cause is great and I've brought my wife and friends along to fundraise for it.’
  • Dee Williams, 56, from Havant, said: ‘It’s great because it’s fun and it’s got me out socialising. My husband died of a heart attack, so for the past three years I’ve been learning how to ride a bike with friends.’
  • Dr Jason Greenslade, from the Waterside Medical Practice on Hayling Island, had a more prescriptive reason for taking part: ‘We’re here to set an example to our patients.’

Hampshire business park support

The sponsorship from Langstone Technology Park enabled the British Heart Foundation to provide 1,500 t-shirts to the cyclists.

The prestigious business park in Hampshire is known for supporting local community events, like this, throughout the year. It encourages its resident businesses to take part in fun and healthy activities, not only as a way to stay healthy but also to network and get to know other employees from the site.  Langstone Technology Park also has an on-site gym and offers great changing facilities and a secure storage area for employees cycling to work.
