Innovation Inspires at Langstone Technology Park

Hampshire Ambassadors, who promote businesses in the county, were given a tour of one of Portsmouth region’s economic success stories – Langstone Technology Park.
They heard how the thriving business hub, run by regional technology parks operator Fasset, is home to 18 leading-edge companies, such as Hitachi, AT&T and Lockheed Martin.
Fasset’s joint managing directors, Chris Allington - Business Development and Gary Medlow - Operations, showed nearly 20 Ambassadors how they faced a daunting challenge ten years ago – how to fill 700,000 sq ft of surplus manufacturing space left over from former sole occupier IBM.
With a £20m investment programme, and deploying best-practice procedures, they focused on turning the park into a vibrant, multi-tenanted technology park, with numbers of people on site soaring from 600 to the current 3,000, with an estimated 4,500 suppliers.
Mr Medlow said: “For us, it was about turning challenges into opportunities and encouraging occupiers to only take space they actually need, rather than what they think they should have 10 years down the line.
“Langstone Technology Park is an economic success story, built on best practice and benchmarking of excellence. None of it happened by chance.
“Customer service delivery is everything, as we told the Ambassadors, and that is reflected by our latest annual survey, which showed satisfaction levels running at 87%. However, that is 13% below where we need to be.”
Attendees also heard from Raglan Tribe, the director of Mindsheet, which specialises in helping companies develop breakthrough products and services and has thrived at Langstone Technology Park.
He displayed a tactical surveillance robot, the size of a remote-controlled toy tank, being developed for the British Army and an example of the kind of innovation taking place locally.
Mr Medlow said: “There is a lot of brilliant innovation taking place here, and we should all be proud of that.”
Every month a group of Ambassadors visit leading-edge companies in Hampshire.
The aim of the visits is to encourage other Hampshire firms to strive for business excellence, develop their own best practice procedures and thereby improve competitiveness.
There are more than 1,000 Ambassadors, some living and working overseas, and all dedicated to promoting Hampshire as a superb place for business, tourism and conferences.
