What Happens To Office Restaurant Food Waste? Created on 09/11/2012 13:11:00
Did you know that the UK produces tonnes of food waste and green waste each year? And most of this – an estimated 7.2 million tons - is landfilled .
The environmental damage
This process emits methane gas, a harmful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming; and costs an average £12bn a year to process. Research has also concluded that energy from waste incinerators emits 33% more carbon dioxide per unit of energy generated than gas-fired power stations. Recycling more food and green waste is the environmentally sound solution for tackling this problem.
Business Conformance requirements
The Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 applied from 1 July 2010 to canteens serving offices, office space to lease and other buildings where food is either supplied to employees or prepared on the premises and supplied to employees.
Going green with food waste - The benefits
In addition to conformance, businesses are increasingly learning that by ensuring food waste is recycled, rather than being sent to landfill, they can achieve many positive benefits which enable them to be both more financially competitive and environmentally responsible.
Anaerobic Digestion is way forward
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is an increasingly used to recycle food waste today, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions at landfill. AD produces methane which can be used to generate electricity that is pumped directly into the national grid and much of the recycled waste is turned into compost and redistributed and redistributed via agricultural schemes.
As part of series of eco food waste initiatives, Langstone Technology Park in Havant, Hants which offers rental offices and office space to lease in Portsmouth, ensures food waste from its restaurant does not go to landfill. Between April and September 2012, Aramark Catering which operates the restaurant for the Business Park’s tenants, has ensured that 5 tons of solid food waste has been recycled through AD.
