Smarter Driving Day and Langstone

One of the largest business parks in Hampshire has launched a smarter driving initiatives day aimed at kick-starting its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint on site.

The objective of the day was to promote a more fuel-efficient driving style by offering tips on how to reduce fuel consumption, cut carbon emission and reduce vehicle wear and tear.

Langstone Technology Park, which has more than 3,000 people working on site across 18 different companies, hosted the awareness exhibition as it looks to reduce carbon emissions by up to 10 per cent within a year.

The event, organised by park operator Fasset, also offered advice on car-alternative ways to travel to the 43-acre site at Havant, which included information on local cycle and walking routes and the better use of public transport.

An eco-driving virtual simulator was also supplied by the Government’s Energy Saving Trust to show how drivers can get more miles for their money by driving smarter, saving up to £21 a month.

The trust’s outreach energy advisors, Beryl Bradford and Dawn Coast, put volunteers through their paces in a Top Gear-style challenge, with the most fuel-efficient drivers vying for poll position on the leader board.

The Cycle to Work Scheme also joined in with bicycle retailer Hargroves, which displayed a range of bikes at the park’s centralised restaurant. Havant Borough Council and Stagecoach promoted their greener travel options.

Emma Bray, Fasset’s Quality and Environmental Co-ordinator, said: “As an organisation we are constantly striving to find new ways to make our community a better place to live and work in and one initiative has been to look at ways in which we can reduce the carbon footprint of our business and those businesses that reside in the facility that we manage.

“As one of the largest managed facilities in the local area we have recognised that we have the ability to make a significant contribution to our local community by taking every step that we can to make our site a ‘greener place to work and live next to’, and by reducing our carbon footprint by only 10% we can make a significant contribution to our environment.”

She added: “Today’s exhibition is about encouraging workers to think and act environmentally responsibly especially when it comes to commuting to the business park and we’re already seeing spaces freed up in the car park thanks to our popular car-sharing initiative.”

Fasset is certified to ISO 14001:2004, a globally recognised environmental management system. The international standard specifies a process for controlling and improving an organisation's environmental performance.
