Appeal For Bone Marrow Donor For 8yr Old Ollie – Be A Match & Save A Life! 29/9/11
Created on 22/09/2011 09:23:00

In support of the appeal for a bone marrow donor for 8 year old Oliver Baylis from Horsham, West Sussex that was recently shown on BBC South Today, Langstone Technology Park is hosting a donor recruitment event and invite anyone aged 18-40 who can, to come along in the hope of finding a match for him.

Oliver was born with Severe congenital neutropenia/ kostmanns (he doesn't make any neutrophils the white cells that fight bacteria infections) he has been in and out of hospital with various infections since he was born. The family was told there was a chance he might develop leukaemia from 10 years onwards but found out he had started to develop it a month before his 8th birthday in July this year. Since his diagnosis Oliver has bravely battled the disease to live as much of a normal life as possible but his need for a transplant is now urgent.

On average, 70 people each day in the UK are diagnosed with a blood cancer – that is one ever 23 minutes.

Anthony Nolan is a pioneering charity that saves lives of people with blood cancer by matching up donors willing to donate their blood stem cell or bone marrow to people they have never met who desperately need life saving transplants. They are appealing to anyone aged 18-40 who wish to find out if they are a potential match for Ollie and to join the Register to come along to Langstone Technology Park. Details about being a donor are available at www.langtp.com

Volunteers will be given information and disclaimer to sign before being asked to take a ‘spit test’ (saliva sample). This will determine what tissue type they are (of which there are hundreds of thousands), whether they are a match for Oliver and confirm they are on the Register. The test takes less than 10 minutes.

In particular Anthony Nolan is keen to recruit males aged 18-30 as they are most likely to be chosen as a match yet they only make up 12% of the total Register.

For this reason, local football team Havant & Waterlooville are supporting the initiative and many of the team are coming to take the test and encourage their supporters and fans to do the same.
